《新纽扣的战争》改编自路易斯·裴高德的儿童文学《钮扣的战争（La Guerre des Boutons）》，原著曾于1961年被法国导演伊夫·罗伯特改编并拍摄成同名电影，由此才渐渐走红。1994年，爱尔兰人也拍摄了一版《纽扣的战争》，但并未取得成功。 不过在这里需要指出的是，伊夫·罗伯特版本的《纽扣的战争》并非该作品首次被改编。事实上，早在1936年就已经有人将本片搬上大银幕，比伊夫·罗伯特早了25年，在那部电影中担任主演的是夏尔·阿兹纳夫，当年他才12岁。
